Tips to finding land for your self build
How can the self the build register help you find your dream plot of land
The quest to begin your self-build project can be daunting – and finding land is usually the first landmark step on your journey. But what you might not have heard about is local authority self/custom build registers. Introduced in the Self-Build and Custom Housebuilding Act 2015, local authorities are required to research demand for self-build plots in their area (as from 1st April 2016).
Why should I register?
Legislation means that the local authorities in England must keep a register of people interested in self and custom build projects – and grant permission for a number of homes requested. Joining the registers allows you to make your contact details available to authorities in areas where you’d like to build – and they can than contact you directly when an opportunity arises.
How do you register?
Registering for these schemes is as simple as filling in a brief online form on your local council website. All you will need to do is include some information such as your name, contact details, and some details around the build you are looking to complete. This will include the number of homes you want to build, the size of the homes and type of building method. A great resource for all the councils operating this scheme can be found on the Self Build Portal – produced by the National Custom & Self Build Association (NaCSBA).
Is it worth my time?
The latest figures from NaCSBA show that 33,000 people have signed up to Right to Build registers meaning 18,000 serviced plots now needs to be permissioned by October 2019. Signing up to a scheme is worth your time and a great stepping stone on the journey to finding the right plot for your self-build.
